Understanding the window period
A test cannot detect HIV immediately after infection. The window period depends on the test type. Tell the clinician when exposure happened and whether you used PEP or PrEP. A reactive self-test needs confirmatory testing; a very early negative result may need repeating.
Recent possible exposure? Do not wait for a test
HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) must start within 72 hours of a possible exposure, and sooner is better. Go promptly to a hospital or service that can assess PEP. Do not wait for symptoms, a later test or an online appointment.
